Description
Ancarani's “Biagio Antico” is a generous, straightforward and genuine Sangiovese, designed to express the most authentic character of this grape without filters or frills. A fruity, savoury and easy-drinking wine that is all about honesty in the glass and conviviality, naturally accompanying the simple moments of time spent together. The grapes come from the hills of Oriolo dei Fichi, near Faenza, at around 120-130 metres above sea level, on “Marzana” soils made up of Pleistocene yellow sands rich in limestone, fossils and clay, which give the wine freshness and savouriness. The north-west-facing vineyards are carefully tended and the harvest is carried out by hand, selecting the best bunches. In the cellar, after destemming, fermentation starts spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts, and the must macerates on the skins for around fifteen days, allowing a gentle yet intense extraction of aromas and structure. The wine then matures for a few months on its natural lees and subsequently in concrete tanks for at least ten months, encouraging a slow and natural evolution, followed by a further six months' rest in the bottle. In the glass it shows a bright ruby red colour. On the nose, clean aromas of red fruits and pomegranate emerge in an intense and immediately recognisable profile, closely tied to the character of the grape. The palate is fresh and dynamic, yet delicate and persistent, supported by a structure that is never overbearing and by a harmonious balance between nose and palate. “Biagio Antico” pairs naturally with simple, flavourful dishes, from pasta with tomato sauce and cured meats to white and red meats and aged cheeses, but it is also at its best on its own, over a chat with friends or a game of briscola.
