Description
Cascina Belmonte is located in the Valtènesi, a hilly area on the south-western shore of Lake Garda (between Desenzano and Salò), formed during the Ice Age by the erosion of the Alps. The soil is thin, gravelly and dry, and the farmers have always chosen the most suitable varieties for the land: the Casaliva olive and the Groppello Gentile grape. The young reality of Cascina Belmonte was born in the early 2000s in Muscoline (BS). In 20 years, Enrico's company has grown to over 20 hectares of land, 13 of which are vineyards, with twelve different grape varieties. It also aims to reduce the amount of sulphites added to the wine in order to produce a wine with a high concentration of healthiness. Sulphites can be produced naturally by certain strains of yeast found in the must, but others are generally added at various stages of production to ensure the wine's longevity.
Another curious technique used by the winery is to wash and dry the grapes before crushing, which makes the wines even cleaner and lighter. Washing not only does not eliminate spontaneous yeasts, but also, by eliminating copper and other heavy metals, allows optimal fermentation kinetics of the same.
Among the wines that stand out as the calling card of this reality is Costellazioni, a rosé. This is the most typical type of wine from the Brescian side of Lake Garda, for the recently created DOC "Valtènesi", created to codify a technique and style that has been handed down from vintage to vintage for over a hundred years. Made exclusively from red grapes, this wine is the best expression of our fortunate territory, bathed by Italy's largest lake. The flagship product is Fuochi della Notte di San Giovanni, produced in the best years with the best grapes from the oldest vineyards. The grapes are harvested in boxes and dried briefly. The wine matures in small, partly new oak barrels. It improves with long ageing in the bottle.
The name of the wine celebrates the night of St. John, the shortest night of the year, magically told in the music of Giovanni Lindo Ferretti. For centuries, peasants in the Italian countryside have lit fires on this night to pray for a good harvest and to drive out evil from their villages.
