Description
Ancarani's “Uvappesa”, a red wine made from overripe grapes, is one of the estate's most representative and distinctive labels, a wine that embodies the history of a rare grape deeply rooted in its territory. It is made exclusively from Centesimino, also known locally as Savignôn Rosso. Historical records tell of old plantings derived from selections handed down over time, leading to the farm of Mr Pietro Pianori, known as “Centesimino”, whose nickname later became the official name of the variety. The grapes come from hillside vineyards at around 70 metres above sea level on the hills of Oriolo dei Fichi, one of the best-suited winegrowing areas in the province of Ravenna. Here, clay loam soils and a south-west exposure favour full ripening of the grapes, which are harvested by hand in several selective passes and then carefully dried under controlled conditions. After destemming and soft crushing, the must ferments on the skins in a long maceration lasting over twenty days. The wine is then aged for a year in barrel. In line with the estate's philosophy, heavy filtration and the use of new barriques or other aromatic artifices are avoided, letting the wine speak for itself with authenticity. In the glass it shows a dense, impenetrable purplish red. The bouquet is intense and layered, dominated by notes of blueberries in spirit intertwined with floral hints of wild rose, in a long and complex aromatic weave. On the palate the entry is soft and enveloping, supported by a substantial structure that carries through to surprising notes of ripe persimmon and fruit preserves. Rich and persistent, it nonetheless keeps a balance that makes it satisfying and original to drink. “Uvappesa” is a wine that invites you to move beyond the traditional conventions of wines made from dried grapes. Outstanding alongside blue, aged or particularly flavourful cheeses, it also creates interesting pairings with dishes full of savouriness and character. A wine that tells a unique story and shows how Centesimino can reach truly surprising levels of complexity and personality.
