In Pianizza di Sopra, a hamlet of Kaltern on the Wine Road, winemaking goes back to distant times, when the monks of the Bavarian monastery of Tegernsee farmed these lands, then known as “Planties superior”, to make wine for their most distinguished guests. That heritage lives on today in the St. Quirinus winery, founded by the Sinn family and dedicated to Saint Quirinus, patron of the monastery. A wayside shrine marking the edge of the vineyards pays tribute to this centuries-old history.
In 2011, with the renowned architect Walter Angonese, the Sinn family built a project that joins love for the land with innovation: a low-energy house and a winery inspired by the principles of organic farming. Since 2013 the estate has devoted itself to winemaking that respects the environment and the grapes, with a gentle approach in both vineyard and cellar. Here gravity replaces pumps, blending ancient methods with modern technology.
The wines mature in wooden casks, steel or clay amphorae. Disease-resistant vines, native and traditional varieties give life to labels that fully express the unique terroir of these hills, with calcareous moraine soils and a climate that favours the vine.
The estate is the fruit of the passion of Michael Sinn who, after agricultural school, chose to devote himself entirely to the art of winemaking. His commitment, together with a sustainable vision, shapes every aspect of St. Quirinus, a symbol of excellence and respect for nature in the heart of Alto Adige.
