Description

The presence of the Blasi family in northern Umbria can be traced back to Bino Blasi, born in 1893. Bino's passion for pork butchery gave birth to a new passion, that for wine, which led to the decision to plant over 30 hectares of vineyards over the years, but above all to acquire an historic cellar dating back to 1742. Didi and Mauro, Bino's son and grandson respectively, continued this passion and in 2009 decided to plant more vineyards and to build a modern winery, equipped with all the comforts and the latest technology for the production of their wines, to be added to the wooden ageing cellar in the basement of the Palazzo dei Conti Bertanzi, dating back to 1742. The cellar is naturally ventilated to maintain the perfect humidity level for barrel and bottle ageing.

Michele, who today coordinates all the work in the cellar, represents the fourth generation of the family, which has set itself the goal of leaving a strong mark on its territory. In the various rooms of the old cellar of Palazzo Bertanzi in Umbertide, there are French oak barrels ranging from 15 to 80 hectolitres. Some of the barrels are used for the aging of the award-winning "MammaMia" raisin wine, which remains there for at least 10 years to reach the desired quality. Bottle ageing takes place in a climate-controlled cellar and lasts from a minimum of 3 months to several years for the more important red wines and passito, depending on the wine. Umbertide, like the whole of Umbria, has an ancient vine-growing tradition (the Etruscans inhabited this area and, as wherever they lived, vine-growing was one of the main activities of their society), but there is no real history of the use of indigenous vines other than the best known in Umbria. For this reason, the Blasi family has decided to plant some of Umbria's traditional native vines, such as Trebbiano Spoletino, Grechetto and Sagrantino, but also to focus on international varieties that are best suited to the microclimate and soils of their estate: from Merlot to Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, from Chardonnay to Sauvignon blanc. The choice is one of quality, without the stereotypes that today's wine-growers would like to see, which necessarily go in search of indigenous varieties, whether they are excellent or insignificant. Within the estate, the most suitable soils have been selected according to the grape variety to be planted and the type of wine to be produced. The result is a perfect match between soil, microclimate, vine and wine. The work in the vineyard is carried out meticulously and, as far as possible, by the family itself.
