Description
Elena Fucci's Verha red wine is the result of a 2022 project that combines respect for tradition with the desire to innovate and support the local community. This wine is not only an authentic expression of the terroir that characterises the village of Barile, but also a concrete response to the risk of abandonment of the area's vineyards.
In fact, the grapes used for Verha come from small farmers in Contrada Catavatta, adjacent to the vineyards of the title. Before the pandemic, these grapes were bought by private individuals from the Campania region for artisanal production. With the arrival of Covid, however, this trade came to a halt, leaving the farmers without a market outlet. In order to prevent the vineyards from being abandoned, Elena Fucci decided to take over these precious grapes and launch a new line of everyday wines, fresh and pleasant, but still inextricably linked to the territory of the Vulture.
The wine is made from local indigenous grape varieties and the vineyards benefit not only from the volcanic soil, composed of lapilli, ash and clay, but also from the continental climate, with cold winters and cool, breezy summers, which allows the grapes to ripen perfectly. The vines are cultivated with the utmost respect for nature, using organic methods and state-of-the-art weather stations to minimise intervention. The strictly manual harvest takes place at the end of September, ensuring a careful selection of the best grapes.
In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed before fermentation with selected yeasts and maceration with almost whole grapes in steel tanks for about 12 days. The wine matures for 6 months in stainless steel tanks, followed by another 6 months in the bottle.
Verha Rosso has a brilliant ruby red colour in the glass, the nose is dominated by aromas of fresh fruit, combined with subtle hints of roasted coffee. The palate is balanced, easy to drink, fresh and mineral, with a fine and persistent tannic texture. A versatile wine, perfect for everyday drinking. With the Verha line, Elena Fucci has created a wine that not only expresses the best of the terroir, but also tells a story of solidarity, tradition and love for the land.
