Description

This prestigious label, made by St. Quirinus from pure Merlot grapes, shows how this grape variety can produce results worthy of a 'Selection' range in areas of Italy particularly suited to it, such as South Tyrol. Add to this the skill of Michael, a young winemaker who has not shied away from his passion and the opportunity to learn the art of making good wine. The biodynamic and organic work, the utmost care and delicacy in the vineyard and in the cellar, pay off in a juicy, full-bodied Merlot Riserva with a soft, fine sip. The plots are located in the Tramin area, particularly in the Unterstoan and Putznai districts, where the soil is mainly gravelly with some dolomitic limestone, at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level, in a hilly area characterised by mild temperatures and a favourable eastern exposure. The yield at harvest is low, around 60 quintals of grapes per hectare, resulting in fruit of good ripeness and quality. The grapes are destemmed and the must ferments by maceration with the skins in steel vats at a controlled temperature of 30°C. After alcoholic fermentation, the Merlot is aged in barriques for a good 24 months, during which time malolactic fermentation takes place. To the eye it is dark garnet red, intense and deep. Aromas of blackberries and ripe cherries are enhanced by delicate nuances of vanilla and toast, the legacy of its long ageing in wood. On the palate, it is a full-bodied wine with a velvety and harmonious entry, silky tannins and a balanced and persistent finish. St. Quirinus Merlot Riserva is the perfect accompaniment to red meat dishes such as roasts and game, as well as to mature cheeses.
