Description

The red version of Porta del Vento's Maqué wine is the result of a meeting between two indigenous Sicilian vines, Nero d'Avola (about 60%) and Perricone (the rest). A blend, this one between the two grapes, very common, adopted to produce labels of depth, such as this red wine, with a thousand nuances, so complex, with hints of Mediterranean scrub and undergrowth, with a long, full-bodied sip, balanced acidity and flavour. These two vines, like the rest of the estate, are located in the valley of the Contrada Valdibella in Camporeale, on sandy and stony soils, at an altitude of about 550 metres above sea level. The old vines are cultivated according to biodynamic and organic principles, without the use of chemical or synthetic products, in order to maintain the balance of the vineyard and its natural biodiversity, with the utmost respect for nature. The harvest is generally carried out by hand at the end of September, using crates. After harvesting, the grapes are cooled to 8°C in cold storage and destemmed; the pre-fermentation maceration is also cold, before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The must is left to macerate on the skins for 10 days. The maqué matures in cement tanks for 12 months before bottling and for a further 6 months in the bottle. This elegant Sicilian red has an intense red colour with violet reflections. The bouquet is complex and varied, with hints of red fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, cherries and violet petals, enriched by a pleasant spicy aftertaste, typical of the variety and reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis. The mouth is firm, with a consistent structure, juicy, with well-integrated, fine and elegant tannins, with a long and persistent finish. Perfect with first courses with meat sauces, red meats, Sicilian rolls, roasts and seasoned cheeses.
