The Trentino-Alto Adige region is nestled between the Alps, Italy's most famous mountain range. It is a wine-producing area characterised by an extraordinary diversity of microclimates and soils. The region is divided into two distinct areas: Trentino in the south and Alto Adige (or South Tyrol) in the north, each with its own specific wine-growing characteristics.
In Trentino, viticulture is mainly concentrated in the valleys along the Adige river, with fresh white wines and sparkling wines of high quality. Among these, Trento DOC, a sparkling wine made using the classic method, is particularly famous. The most representative whites are Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, while the reds include Marzemino and Teroldego Rotaliano, the latter known for its intensity and smoothness.
South Tyrol, influenced by German culture, produces some of the best white wines in Italy, thanks to the cool climate of the Alpine valleys. The aromatic and spicy Gewürztraminer is one of the most representative varieties. Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc and Müller-Thurgau also produce wines of great elegance and finesse. Among the reds, Lagrein and Schiava are the most important indigenous varieties, with wines of soft tannins and fruity character.
With its mix of tradition and innovation, this Alpine region remains one of the most dynamic and fascinating in the Italian wine scene.
