Unusual grapes are the varieties you rarely find outside their own area. This page gathers Italovino's wines made from rare grapes, crossings and resistant varieties. Among the native grapes, the Lacrima di Morro d'Alba by Podere Santa Lucia in Marche is a red that smells of rose and violet. In Abruzzo, Paride d'Angelo makes Cococciola as a white. In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Murva makes the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso «Murellis»; in Trentino-Alto Adige, St. Quirinus uses Schiava for the «Kalterersee» Classico Superiore. Then there are the crossings, born from two well-known grapes. Rebo, a red, is made by Cantina Pisoni in Trentino-Alto Adige and by Cascina Belmonte in Lombardia; Incrocio Bruni 54, a white, comes from Podere Santa Lucia in Marche. Finally the resistant varieties, called PIWI: grapes that resist vine diseases and need fewer treatments in the vineyard. They are the «Planties» wines by St. Quirinus in Trentino-Alto Adige: a white, a red, a rosé and an amphora white. To start, pick a grape you have never tasted and compare it with the wine you usually drink.
