Description
Vinicola Cicella makes its Malvasia Nera from the grape of the same name, a variety that has historically been widespread in Puglia and is an integral part of the region’s rich grape heritage. Malvasia Nera has a light aromatic streak and is often blended with more widely grown varieties such as Negroamaro; however, thanks to the ideal soil and climate conditions around Torricella, in the heart of Salento, it can fully express its potential, producing a wine of character with good structure, an enveloping aroma of crisp fruit and lively notes of Mediterranean scrub.
The vines are bush-trained (alberello) in plots near the winery, with soils made up mostly of sand, enriched with silt and clay, a combination known as medium-textured soil. After the harvest, the grapes are taken to the winery and, once destemmed, alcoholic fermentation begins. It is carried out by selected yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with maceration on the skins. At the end of fermentation, the wine is moved to other stainless steel tanks for 12 months of ageing before being bottled.
In the glass it shows a deep ruby red colour; on the nose it releases a rich, fruity bouquet with sweet notes of cherry, blackberry and a light touch of pomegranate. It closes with hints of raspberry and delicate notes of Mediterranean scrub, evoking the scents of the south. On the palate it is full-bodied and well structured, with harmonious, velvety tannins that gently embrace the palate. The fresh, long finish leaves a vivid memory, inviting another sip. Malvasia Nera pairs well with delicate pasta dishes, soups, risottos, roast meats and aged cheeses.
